These “night owls” need longer to get going in the morning and only really reach their peak in the evening. This kind of biorhythm is not just a preference – it is a genetically-based reality which is more or less completely ignored by employers, schools, kindergartens and universities.
In Denmark a society has been formed to combat the “tyranny of early rising”: some 5000 members have come together to promote what they call a “B-society” where they can follow their individual circadian rhythms to enjoy greater productivity and quality of life. The initiative is supported by Danish scientists, politics and even employers: the first online job portal for “B-people” was opened in October.
Groups are planned in other countries to support the night-owl initiative.
